Currency: Tanzania Shilling. However US Dollars are widely accepted as well as major credit cards. Conversion rates change extensively and travellers cheques are not accepted everywhere. These can be cashed at forex bureaus in all major towns.
Shopping: Tanzanians produce a wide variety of curios, from batiks to Tinga Tinga paintings, ebony carvings to masai beadwork. Many of the curios and handicraft are made from wood and other delicate material…make sure you get them wrapped carefully before shipping them or traveling with them in your luggage. Where prices are not marked, bargaining is expected.
The beautiful blue/purple Tanzanite is a gemstone which is exclusive to Tanzania. You are advised to visit a reputable licensed dealer for this as imitations can look very ‘real’ to the untrained eye. Tanzania is also popular for a wide variety of spices.
